What Is PLR Therapy? Understanding Past Life Regression and Soul Lessons

Exploring how past life regression may help you understand repeating patterns, unresolved soul lessons, and the deeper meaning behind what you are experiencing today.

What if a challenge you are facing today is not only about what is happening in your life right now?

What if the relationship pattern you keep repeating, the fear you cannot fully explain, or the lesson you seem to encounter over and over again has a much deeper history?

This is one way to understand PLR therapy, or past life regression therapy.

When I think about past life regression, I do not think of it as simply going into hypnosis to find out whether you were royalty, a healer, a soldier, or someone famous in another lifetime.

Most of the people who come to see me are looking for something much more personal.

They want to understand why something is happening in their life now.

  • Maybe they keep attracting the same type of relationship.
  • Maybe they continually sacrifice themselves for other people.
  • Maybe they struggle with a fear that seems much stronger than the circumstances around it.
  • Maybe they feel an immediate and powerful connection with someone they have only just met.
  • Or perhaps they have reached a point in life where they know something needs to change, but they cannot understand what is keeping them stuck.

From a spiritual perspective, one possibility is that some of these challenges may be connected to lessons or experiences from another lifetime.

Past life regression gives us a way to explore that possibility.

The question is not only: Who was I before? The deeper question is: What might my soul still be trying to understand?

At Intuitive Clarity Hypnosis, I offer past life regression sessions and spiritual hypnosis online and in person in Virginia Beach for clients who want to explore soul lessons, repeating patterns, and subconscious blocks in a grounded and compassionate way.

Quick Answer

PLR therapy stands for past life regression therapy. It uses hypnosis to guide you into a relaxed, focused state where subconscious imagery, emotions, memories, or impressions connected to a possible past life may come forward. The purpose is not to prove who you were in another lifetime. The purpose is to explore whether a past life pattern, vow, relationship, fear, or unresolved lesson may be connected to something you are experiencing in your life today.

PLR is a complementary spiritual and subconscious exploration process. It is not psychotherapy or licensed mental health treatment, and should not replace medical or mental health care when those are needed.

The Way I Understand PLR Therapy

My approach to past life regression begins with the belief that our souls may experience more than one lifetime.

Within that spiritual framework, each lifetime gives us opportunities to learn, grow, experience relationships, make choices, and develop a deeper understanding of ourselves.

Sometimes we learn the lesson. Sometimes we do not. Sometimes we may understand part of it, but something remains unresolved.

If the lesson is important to our continued soul growth, I believe it may present itself again. The circumstances may look different. The people may be different. The relationship may be different. But underneath it all, the lesson can feel strangely familiar.

You may repeatedly find yourself learning about:

Relational Lessons

Trust, forgiveness, abandonment, love, loss, responsibility, boundaries, and self-worth in the context of relationships with others.

Personal Lessons

Independence, courage, speaking your truth, accepting yourself, letting go, and allowing yourself to receive.

Energetic Lessons

Control, grief, guilt, patterns around giving and receiving, and the deeper beliefs that shape how you move through the world.

You may not consciously know that you are working with the same lesson. You simply know that something keeps happening.

This is where PLR therapy can become meaningful. Through past life regression, we explore whether there may be another lifetime connected to the challenge you are facing today. The purpose is not simply to watch a past-life story unfold. The purpose is to understand why that lifetime may be showing itself to you now.

If you are new to this kind of exploration, you may also want to read about what past life regression hypnosis is or explore the broader past life regression hypnosis guide.

You Cannot Change the Past Life. You Can Change What You Do With the Lesson in This One.

This is one of the most important parts of how I view past life regression.

Suppose you experience what appears to be a previous lifetime in which you repeatedly gave away your power. Perhaps you remained in a relationship where you were not treated well. Maybe you never spoke up for yourself. Maybe you lived according to everyone else’s expectations and never allowed yourself to choose your own path.

That lifetime eventually ends.

But from a spiritual perspective, the deeper lesson may not have been completed. Then, in your current lifetime, you begin encountering circumstances that bring you face-to-face with the same theme.

  • Different people. Different time. Different circumstances. Same lesson.
  • You may again find yourself giving away your power.
  • You may again struggle to create boundaries.
  • You may again find yourself afraid to choose what you truly want.

A past life regression may help you recognize that pattern from a different perspective.

The Most Important Part

The important part is not simply realizing, “I experienced this before.” The important part is asking: What am I going to do differently now? You cannot change what may have happened in another lifetime. But you can change what you do with the lesson in this one.

What Happens When a Soul Lesson Is Not Resolved?

Within a reincarnation-based spiritual belief system, unresolved lessons may continue presenting opportunities for growth.

I do not see this as punishment. I see it more as an unfinished class.

Imagine taking a course but never fully understanding one of the central concepts. You move forward, but eventually you encounter that concept again. You have another opportunity to understand it.

The lesson may show itself through a relationship. It may appear through a recurring emotional pattern. It may emerge when you are forced to choose between what feels safe and what feels aligned.

Sometimes it appears as the same basic situation happening repeatedly until you finally stop and ask: Why does this keep happening to me?

Past life regression can offer a different question: What might this experience be trying to teach me? That shift alone can change the way you look at a recurring challenge.

Instead of seeing yourself as someone who is simply unlucky in relationships, for example, you may begin exploring a deeper lesson about boundaries, self-worth, attachment, forgiveness, or independence. Instead of asking only why something happened, you begin asking what you are meant to understand from it.

You may also find it helpful to read about reincarnation and karma and how those concepts connect to the patterns we carry.

A Past Life May Be Relevant Because of What Is Happening Now

One of the most interesting things about past life regression is that people often enter a session focused on the present.

They are not always coming in because they desperately want to know who they were hundreds of years ago. They may come in because something in their present life is difficult to understand.

A person might wonder:

  • Why do I keep ending up in the same type of relationship?
  • Why am I so afraid of being abandoned?
  • Why do I feel responsible for everyone?
  • Why is it so difficult for me to trust?
  • Why does this person feel so familiar to me?
  • Why do I feel drawn to a particular place or period in history?
  • Why do I have a fear that seems to have no obvious origin?
  • Why do I feel like I am supposed to be doing something different with my life?
  • Why do I keep repeating the same mistake even though I know better?

Past life regression gives us a way to explore whether another lifetime may provide symbolic or spiritual insight into the question.

The Past Life as a Doorway

The past life is not necessarily the destination. It may be the doorway. And what we find inside that doorway is most valuable when it helps us understand something about the life we are living right now.

If you are curious about whether you may have lived before, you may also want to explore signs of a past life or how to know if you have had a past life.

Imagine a Woman Who Keeps Losing Herself in Relationships

Imagine a woman comes to see me because every serious relationship follows a similar pattern.

At first, she feels deeply connected to her partner. Then, little by little, she begins putting the other person’s needs before her own. She stops doing things she enjoys. She becomes afraid of conflict. She worries constantly about being left. Eventually, she realizes she has lost herself in the relationship again.

She knows this pattern. She has worked on it. She understands it intellectually. But she still cannot seem to stop repeating it.

During a past life regression, she experiences what appears to be another lifetime. In that life, she is dependent on another person for survival. Perhaps she lives in circumstances where women have very little independence. The person she depends upon eventually dies. She experiences overwhelming fear and helplessness. She does not believe she can survive alone.

The regression continues, and she eventually reaches the end of that lifetime. As we explore the experience, the question becomes less about proving whether every detail literally occurred. Instead, we begin looking at the lesson.

Perhaps the theme is: I cannot survive on my own.

Now look at her current life. She may have independence. She may have a career. She may be perfectly capable of supporting herself. Yet emotionally, the same underlying belief may still appear in relationships: I cannot be okay without this person.

From a spiritual perspective, the regression may be giving her an opportunity to see that lesson clearly. Her task in this lifetime may be different:

  • I can love someone without losing myself.
  • I can be connected and still be independent.
  • I can survive endings.
  • I can choose myself without abandoning someone else.

The past life does not make the decision for her. It gives her another way to understand what she may be working through today.

To explore more about how past life experiences may show up in current relationships, you may find my article on how past life relationships influence current relationships helpful.

Past Life Relationships and Unfinished Lessons

Sometimes the lesson involves another person.

You may meet someone and feel an immediate connection that seems far stronger than the amount of time you have known them. The relationship may feel deeply loving. Or incredibly difficult. Sometimes both.

Within a spiritual framework, some people understand these relationships through ideas such as:

  • Soul contracts
  • Karmic relationships
  • Soulmates
  • Past life relationships
  • Repeating soul connections
  • Unfinished business between souls

The idea is not necessarily that two people are destined to remain together forever. Sometimes the relationship itself may exist to bring a lesson forward. Perhaps one soul is helping another learn boundaries. Perhaps both people are learning forgiveness. Maybe the relationship creates an opportunity to finally release a dynamic that has repeated across more than one lifetime.

An Important Grounding Note

A powerful spiritual connection does not automatically mean a relationship is healthy or that you are required to stay in it. Past life regression should not take away your free will. Ideally, it gives you more information to reflect on so you can make conscious choices about the relationship you are living in now.

What PLR Therapy Is and What It Is Not

The phrase PLR therapy is commonly used to mean past life regression therapy, but I generally describe my own work as past life regression or past life regression hypnosis.

I am a Certified Hypnotist and Regressionist. My sessions are complementary hypnotic and spiritual services rather than psychotherapy or licensed mental health treatment.

PLR May Be Approached AsPLR Should Not Be Presented As
A spiritual explorationScientific proof that reincarnation exists
A way to examine repeating life themesGuaranteed recovery of historically accurate memories
An opportunity to explore subconscious imageryA replacement for licensed mental health treatment
A way to reflect on possible soul lessonsProof that a suspected traumatic event definitely happened
An exploration of relationships or perceived karmic connectionsA prediction of exactly what will happen in your future
A personal experience related to beliefs about reincarnationIndependently verified historical fact

Hypnosis itself involves focused attention and increased concentration, but memory is reconstructive and can be influenced by suggestion. For that reason, imagery or experiences that arise during regression should not automatically be treated as independently verified historical facts.

That does not mean the experience cannot feel meaningful. It means you can explore the experience without forcing yourself to prove exactly where every image, feeling, or impression came from.

What If I Am Just Making It Up?

This is one of the most common concerns people have during regression.

They may suddenly see a building. A road. A person. A pair of shoes. And almost immediately, the conscious mind steps in: “Did I just invent that?”

You do not have to answer that question while you are having the experience. In fact, trying to analyze everything as it happens can pull you away from the experience itself.

I often encourage people to simply notice what comes forward.

  • You may see something vividly.
  • You may sense it.
  • You may feel an emotion.
  • You may simply know something without understanding why.
  • Some people experience detailed scenes. Others experience fragments.

There is no requirement that you have a movie playing in your mind. And you cannot do it wrong.

The goal is to allow the experience to unfold and then explore what feels relevant afterward.

You may find it helpful to read more about what happens during a past life regression so you know what to expect before your session.

Does It Have to Be a Literal Past Life to Have Meaning?

This is where I believe people can hold different perspectives.

Someone who strongly believes in reincarnation may experience a regression as an actual memory from another lifetime. Another person may see it as symbolic material emerging from the subconscious. Someone else may not know what they believe.

I do not think you necessarily have to settle that question before exploring the meaning of the experience.

You can ask:

  • What did this experience bring forward?
  • What emotions appeared?
  • What pattern did I notice?
  • What lesson seems connected to my current life?
  • Why might this particular story have emerged now?

A Grounded Perspective

Scientific evidence does not establish hypnotically recalled past-life experiences as verified memories, and concerns about suggestion and false-memory formation are important reasons to avoid presenting a regression as proof that historical events occurred exactly as experienced. For someone approaching PLR spiritually, however, the value may lie in the insight and reflection the experience creates.

You may also want to explore why people believe in reincarnation and whether any of those frameworks feel relevant to your own understanding.

How I Approach Past Life Regression

When someone comes to me for a past life regression, we begin with the life they are living now.

I want to understand what brought them to the session. What are they struggling with? What pattern do they keep noticing? What question feels unresolved? What do they most want to understand?

That intention becomes part of the session.

From there, I guide the person into hypnosis, which creates an opportunity to quiet some of the everyday mental noise and focus inward. Hypnosis is commonly described as a state involving focused attention and concentration rather than unconsciousness.

As the regression unfolds, I guide rather than dictate. A person may begin experiencing images, feelings, sensations, people, places, or a sense of knowing. We explore what emerges. We may move through different scenes within the lifetime. We may explore important relationships. We may look at major turning points.

Depending on the session and the client’s beliefs, we may explore the end of that lifetime and what comes afterward. Sometimes the experience naturally leads into spiritual exploration involving the Higher Self, Higher Power, or a deeper sense of inner wisdom.

The Most Important Question

The most important question always remains connected to the present: Why is this lifetime important for you to see now?

If you are curious about working with a practitioner, you may want to read more about finding the best past life regression hypnotherapists and what to look for in a session.

The Lesson Is More Important Than the Costume

People sometimes become fascinated by the details of a past life. Where did I live? What was my name? What century was it? What was I wearing?

Those details can certainly be interesting. But they are rarely the most important part of the work for me.

I am much more interested in questions like:

  • How did you live?
  • What did you believe about yourself?
  • What choice did you make?
  • What did you never allow yourself to do?
  • What did you regret?
  • Who did you love?
  • What did you fear?
  • What lesson did you understand at the end of that life?
  • What remained unfinished?
  • And finally: How does that connect with your life today?

That is where PLR becomes more than curiosity.

What Happens When You Understand the Lesson?

Understanding something does not automatically make every problem disappear. But awareness can create choice.

Imagine that you finally recognize the lesson behind a pattern you have repeated for years.

  • You may begin noticing the pattern earlier.
  • You may realize when you are slipping back into it.
  • You may understand why a particular situation triggers such a powerful reaction.
  • You may begin making a different choice.

From a spiritual perspective, this is where growth happens. You are not simply reliving the past. You are responding differently in the present.

For someone who believes in reincarnation, there may also be a deeper intention: to understand the lesson now, to work with it now, to integrate it now, so that the same lesson does not need to continue presenting itself in the same way in another lifetime.

Whether you understand that literally, spiritually, or symbolically, the focus comes back to the person you are today.

You may also want to read more about healing through past life regression and what integration after a session can look like.

Can PLR Help You Understand Your Life Purpose?

Sometimes the lesson revealed through past life regression is not about something painful. It may be connected to purpose.

A person may experience a lifetime in which they used a particular gift but abandoned it. They may see themselves as a healer, teacher, artist, caregiver, leader, or spiritual practitioner. In their current life, they may have felt drawn toward similar work but repeatedly ignored the pull.

The regression may not be telling them that they must follow a particular career. Instead, it may invite them to look more closely at a part of themselves they have been neglecting.

Sometimes the question becomes: What part of me is asking to be expressed in this lifetime?

If this resonates, you may also want to explore my articles on soul’s purpose and how to find your soul purpose. If you feel you may have been a healer in a previous life, my article on being a healer in a past life may also be meaningful.

Can Past Life Regression Help With Karmic Patterns?

Within traditions that believe in karma and reincarnation, karmic patterns may be understood as experiences or lessons that continue until they are recognized and worked through.

I do not think karma needs to be viewed as punishment. It can be understood as consequence, learning, and opportunity.

You may be given another chance to:

  • Choose differently.
  • Set the boundary.
  • Speak the truth.
  • Forgive.
  • Release guilt.
  • Accept love.
  • Stop abandoning yourself.
  • Trust your intuition.
  • Let go of control.
  • Walk away.
  • Stay when your instinct is always to run.
  • Learn compassion without becoming responsible for everyone.

A past life regression may help bring attention to the lesson. You still have to live it.

Past Life Regression Is Ultimately About This Life

That may sound strange. After all, the entire experience involves exploring another lifetime.

But the reason I believe PLR can be meaningful is because of what it reveals about this one.

  • The life you are living now is where you have choices.
  • It is where you can recognize a pattern.
  • It is where you can change a relationship dynamic.
  • It is where you can stop giving away your power.
  • It is where you can forgive.
  • It is where you can establish the boundary.
  • It is where you can finally listen to yourself.

Perhaps another lifetime helps explain the lesson. But this lifetime gives you the opportunity to learn it.

Not to stay in the past. But to understand it well enough that you can finally move forward.

What Are You Really Looking for in a Past Life?

Maybe you are curious about who you were. There is nothing wrong with that. Past life regression can be fascinating.

But beneath the curiosity, there is often another question.

  • Why am I the way I am?
  • Why do certain relationships affect me so deeply?
  • Why does this fear feel so familiar?
  • Why do I keep repeating this pattern?
  • Why do I feel drawn toward something I have never experienced?
  • Why does part of me feel as though there is something I am supposed to understand?

A past life regression may offer you another lens through which to explore those questions. You may interpret what comes forward as a genuine past-life experience. You may see it as symbolic communication from your subconscious. You may simply remain open to the possibility that you do not fully understand where it came from.

The Real Purpose

For me, the most important question is not whether you can prove every detail of another lifetime. It is: What can this experience teach you about the life you are living now? Perhaps that is the real purpose of looking backward. Not to stay in the past. But to understand it well enough that you can finally move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions About PLR Therapy

What does PLR stand for?

PLR stands for past life regression. PLR therapy refers to past life regression therapy, a complementary hypnotic process that uses a relaxed, focused state to explore subconscious imagery, emotions, and possible past life patterns connected to present-life challenges.

What is PLR therapy used for?

PLR therapy may be used to explore repeating relationship patterns, unexplained fears, emotional blocks, soul lessons, life purpose, karmic patterns, and a sense of unfinished business that may feel connected to a past life.

Is PLR therapy the same as past life regression?

PLR therapy and past life regression are closely related terms. PLR stands for past life regression. Some practitioners use the term PLR therapy to describe past life regression sessions. At Intuitive Clarity Hypnosis, this work is offered as past life regression hypnosis, a complementary spiritual service rather than licensed psychotherapy.

What happens during a PLR session?

During a past life regression session, you are guided into a relaxed, focused state using hypnosis. You may experience images, feelings, body sensations, symbols, or a sense of inner knowing connected to a possible past life. The session explores what emerged and how it may relate to your current life.

What is a soul lesson in past life regression?

A soul lesson is a theme, pattern, or experience that may recur across lifetimes until it is recognized, understood, and worked through. Common soul lessons may include trust, forgiveness, self-worth, boundaries, independence, love, and letting go.

Can PLR therapy help with repeating patterns?

Past life regression may help you explore whether a repeating pattern in your current life is connected to a past life theme or unresolved soul lesson. Understanding the deeper pattern can create awareness and support different choices in the present.

Do I have to believe in reincarnation for PLR to be meaningful?

Not necessarily. Some people approach past life regression as a literal spiritual memory. Others see it as symbolic material from the subconscious. The experience may still be meaningful as a way of exploring emotional patterns and inner themes, even without a firm belief in reincarnation.

What if I think I am making up the past life during a regression?

That is a very common concern. You do not need to answer the question of whether the experience is literal while it is happening. The goal is to notice what comes forward and explore what feels relevant afterward. You cannot do it wrong.

Is PLR therapy a replacement for therapy or medical care?

No. Past life regression is a complementary spiritual and subconscious exploration process, not licensed psychotherapy or medical treatment. If you are dealing with trauma, severe anxiety, depression, or crisis, it is important to work with a licensed mental health professional.

Can past life regression help with soul purpose?

Yes, sometimes. A past life regression may reveal a gift, talent, or calling that a person has used before but set aside in this lifetime. It may invite reflection on what part of yourself is asking to be expressed now.

Do you offer PLR therapy in Virginia Beach?

Yes. Past life regression sessions are available in person in Virginia Beach and online for clients throughout Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton Roads, Virginia, and beyond.
