How Do Spiritual Readings Work?

Spiritual Readings

How Do Spiritual Readings Work?

A clear, honest look at what actually happens during a spiritual reading — from tapping in to exploring what the messages mean for your life.

If you have never had a spiritual reading before, you may be curious about what actually happens during one.

Does the reader immediately start receiving information? Do you need to tell them your entire story first? Are you supposed to sit quietly while they talk? Can you ask questions? And where is the information coming from in the first place?

Every spiritual reader has a different approach, but I can explain exactly how spiritual readings work when you have a session with me.

My readings are conversational, but there is also a process behind them. I take time to tap in, share the information I receive, pause to see what resonates with you, and then continue based on the questions or additional guidance that comes forward.

The reading usually moves through this process a few times before we step back and look at the bigger picture. From there, we can talk about how the messages intersect with your life, what they may be helping you understand, and how you can use the insight as you move forward.

If you are completely new to this type of experience, you may also want to start by learning what a spiritual reading is.

How do spiritual readings work — a calm, grounded guide to the reading process

Quick Answer

A spiritual reading is a process of receiving intuitive or spiritual information and exploring how that information may relate to your life. In my spiritual readings, the process generally looks like this:

  • I explain how the reading will work.
  • I take a few moments to tap in.
  • I begin sharing the information I receive.
  • I pause and ask whether what I have shared resonates.
  • You have an opportunity to ask questions.
  • I go back to Source for additional information or clarification.
  • We continue this process naturally, usually two or three times.
  • We discuss the meaning behind the messages and how they may connect with your life.

I think the last part is especially important. For me, a spiritual reading is not simply about giving you a series of messages and sending you on your way. I want to help you understand how the information may relate to what you are experiencing and what you can take from it as you move forward.

How My Spiritual Reading Process Works

When I begin a spiritual reading, I first explain the process so you know exactly what to expect.

This is important because there may be moments when I am quiet. I may need time to receive more information or understand what I am being shown. I never want someone sitting across from me wondering what is happening or feeling like they need to fill the silence.

Here is what you can expect during a spiritual reading with me.

Step 1: I Explain What to Expect

Before I begin the reading, I explain how I work.

I want you to understand that I may need a few moments to tap in before I begin receiving information. Once the reading starts, I usually share what I am receiving for a while before pausing to check in with you.

You do not have to sit perfectly still or worry about saying the wrong thing. There will be opportunities to ask questions and talk about what is coming through.

Knowing the process beforehand allows you to relax and simply experience the reading.

Step 2: I Take a Moment to Tap In

Once we are ready to begin, I take a few moments to tap in.

Sometimes this happens within seconds. Other times, it may take closer to a minute.

During that time, I may be quiet.

I explain this beforehand because I do not want you expecting me to immediately start talking the moment we begin. I need a little space to shift my attention, connect with Source, and allow the information to start coming through.

Once I feel connected, I begin sharing what I receive.

Step 3: I Share the Information I Receive

When information starts coming through, I talk.

Depending on the reading, the information may come through in different ways. I may receive:

  • Words or phrases
  • Images
  • Symbols
  • Feelings
  • Emotional impressions
  • Colors
  • Numbers
  • A sense of knowing
  • Messages that seem connected to a particular situation or question

Sometimes the meaning is immediately clear to me. Other times, I simply share what I am receiving and allow the meaning to unfold as the reading continues.

I try not to interrupt the flow too quickly. I usually allow the information to come through naturally until I feel there is a good place to pause.

Step 4: We Pause to See What Resonates

At some point, I will feel the need to stop and check in with you.

I may ask whether what I have shared resonates or whether you understand how it may connect with your life.

This is where the reading begins to become more interactive.

You may immediately recognize what I am talking about. Something I say may connect with a relationship, experience, feeling, or situation that is already happening in your life.

Other times, you may understand part of the message but have questions about another part.

That gives us somewhere to go next.

Step 5: You Can Ask Questions

Once I pause, you have an opportunity to ask questions about what I have shared.

You may want clarification about a particular message. You may wonder why something came through. You may want to know more about a relationship, situation, or pattern connected to the information.

Sometimes you may not have a question at all.

If what I shared makes sense and you simply want me to continue, I can do that too.

The reading does not follow a rigid script. It develops based on what comes through and what feels most relevant to explore.

Step 6: I Go Back to Source for More Information

When you have a question or we feel there is more to understand, I tap back in.

See also  Are Past Life Regressions Real? Evidence, Science & Spiritual Views

I think of this as going back to Source.

I may ask for clarification around what has already come through, explore your question more deeply, or simply remain open to whatever additional information is available.

Then I begin sharing again.

Sometimes the next information expands on the original message. Sometimes it adds another layer. Occasionally, it shifts the reading in a direction neither of us expected.

That is part of what makes each reading different.

Step 7: We Continue the Process Naturally

The reading usually continues in this back-and-forth rhythm.

I receive and share information. We pause. You tell me what resonates or ask questions. I tap back in and see what else comes through.

We typically move through this process two or three times.

There is room for the reading to unfold rather than forcing everything into a predetermined structure.

“The process is less like receiving a speech and more like following a thread.”

One message may lead to a question. That question may lead to another piece of information. As we continue, a larger picture often begins to form.

Step 8: We Explore What the Messages Mean for Your Life

Toward the end of the reading, I like to step back and look at the bigger picture with you.

We may talk about:

  • Themes that appeared throughout the reading.
  • Patterns that seem to be repeating.
  • How the messages connect with your current life.
  • What you may be learning from a particular situation.
  • Something your intuition may already have been trying to tell you.
  • A different perspective you may want to consider.
  • How you can use the insight as you move forward.

Why This Part Matters

Receiving information is only one part of a spiritual reading. Understanding what the information means to you is another. You may leave with validation around something you already sensed, a different perspective on a situation, or a deeper understanding of a pattern that has been difficult to recognize. My goal is for the reading to give you something meaningful to reflect on, not simply a collection of messages.

Where Does the Information in a Spiritual Reading Come From?

This is one of the most interesting questions people ask about how spiritual readings work.

The answer depends largely on the reader and their spiritual beliefs.

Different readers may describe receiving information through:

  • Source
  • God or a Higher Power
  • Higher Self
  • Spirit guides
  • Intuition
  • Inner knowing
  • Spiritual guidance
  • Energy
  • Loved ones in spirit

I personally use the word Source when describing where I return for additional information during a reading.

No Belief System Required

I also believe it is important to acknowledge that spiritual and intuitive experiences are personal and subjective. People have different beliefs about where intuitive information comes from and how it should be interpreted. You do not have to adopt a particular spiritual belief system to receive a reading from me. What matters is whether the information feels meaningful and whether it helps you reflect on your life with greater clarity.

How Do Spiritual Readers Receive Information?

Spiritual readers may experience intuitive information in different ways. Even the same reader may receive information differently from one session to another.

Type of InformationHow It May Be Experienced
ImagesA mental image, scene, person, place, or object
WordsA word, name, phrase, or message that comes to mind
FeelingsAn emotional impression connected to a person or situation
Inner knowingInformation that seems to arrive without consciously reasoning through it
SymbolsColors, numbers, objects, animals, or other symbolic imagery
Physical sensationsA sensation the reader intuitively associates with part of the message

Not every spiritual reader experiences all of these, and not every impression is meant to be interpreted literally.

A symbol, for example, may mean something completely different to one person than it does to another. That is one reason the conversation between the reader and client can be so important.

Sometimes the client understands the meaning of a symbol before the reader does.

What Does It Mean When Something in a Spiritual Reading “Resonates”?

You will often hear the word resonate in conversations about spiritual readings.

When I ask whether something resonates, I am asking whether the information feels relevant or recognizable to you.

You may recognize it because:

  • It describes something currently happening in your life.
  • It connects with something you have been thinking or feeling.
  • It reminds you of a person, experience, or relationship.
  • It validates something your intuition has already been telling you.
  • It brings attention to a pattern you have begun to notice.
  • It simply feels meaningful in a way that is difficult to explain.

Resonance and Discernment

Resonance is not necessarily the same thing as objective proof. It means the information has meaning or relevance within the context of your experience. That distinction is important. I want you to use your own discernment during a reading rather than feeling that you have to agree with everything simply because I said it.

What Happens If Something Does Not Resonate?

Not everything in a spiritual reading will necessarily make immediate sense.

Sometimes a message may become clearer later. Sometimes the information may be symbolic rather than literal. There may also be times when something simply does not resonate with you.

If that happens, I do not believe in forcing the information to fit.

We may:

  • Ask for additional clarification.
  • Explore whether the message could be symbolic.
  • Look at the information from another perspective.
  • Continue with the reading and see whether later information adds context.
  • Simply leave the message where it is.

You do not need to change your memories, beliefs, or understanding of your own life to make a message fit. Your discernment remains important throughout the process.

Do I Need to Tell the Reader Everything Beforehand?

No.

You do not need to tell me your entire life story before we begin a spiritual reading.

You may have a particular intention or area of your life you want to explore, and you are welcome to share that.

You may also simply want to see what comes through.

As the reading develops, there will be opportunities to provide context, ask questions, and talk about how the messages connect with your life.

Let It Develop Naturally

The goal is not to keep information from the reader as a test. At the same time, you do not need to feel responsible for giving me enough information to make the reading work. We can allow the conversation to develop naturally.

Can You Ask Questions During a Spiritual Reading?

Absolutely.

In fact, questions are an important part of how I conduct my readings.

I usually share information first and then pause. At that point, you can ask about something I have said or bring forward a question that has come up for you.

See also  What If You Don't Feel Called to Anything

I can then tap back in and see whether additional information comes through.

This creates a natural cycle:

The Reading Cycle

Receive information → Share the message → Check resonance → Ask questions → Return to Source → Explore more deeply. We may move through that cycle several times during your session.

A Hypothetical Spiritual Reading From Start to Finish

Sometimes the easiest way to understand how spiritual readings work is to imagine what an actual session might look like.

Imagine Jessica books a spiritual reading because she feels increasingly unhappy in her career.

She does not tell me every detail beforehand. She simply shares that she has been questioning her direction and would like clarity.

Before beginning, I explain how the reading works. I let Jessica know that I will take a moment to tap in and that there may be some silence while I do.

After a short pause, I begin receiving information.

One of the impressions that comes forward is a strong sense of restriction, along with an image of an open door.

I share what I am receiving.

Jessica immediately recognizes the feeling of restriction. She has been describing her job to friends as feeling “boxed in.” The open door, however, does not immediately make sense to her.

We continue.

More information comes through around choice and the feeling that she has been waiting for someone else to give her permission to make a change.

At that point, I pause.

Jessica says that part strongly resonates. She explains that she has considered applying for a position in a completely different field but keeps talking herself out of it.

She asks whether the open door could be connected to that opportunity.

I tap back in.

Rather than receiving a message telling Jessica that she absolutely must take the new job, the information that comes through centers around possibility. The open door may represent an opportunity to consider a different path, but Jessica still has to decide whether walking through it is right for her.

Now the reading has moved beyond the original symbol.

We begin discussing what the message may mean in the context of Jessica’s life.

Perhaps the deeper issue is not simply whether she should change jobs. It may be that she has spent years waiting until she feels completely certain before allowing herself to explore something new.

By the end of the reading, Jessica still has a decision to make.

Instead of asking, “Can someone tell me whether I should leave my job?” she may begin asking, “Why have I been afraid to explore the opportunities already available to me?”

That is an example of how a spiritual reading can unfold. The message opens the door to insight. The conversation helps uncover the meaning. You decide what you do with it.

How Do Online Spiritual Readings Work?

Online spiritual readings follow essentially the same process as my in-person readings.

I explain how the session works, take a moment to tap in, share what I receive, and pause periodically so we can discuss what resonates and explore your questions.

Many people enjoy receiving spiritual readings online because they can join from a familiar, private environment.

If you are having an online reading, I recommend finding a space where you can:

  • Be comfortable and relatively undisturbed.
  • Hear the conversation clearly.
  • Speak openly.
  • Take notes if you would like.
  • Give yourself a little time afterward to reflect.

I offer online spiritual and intuitive readings to clients regardless of location, as well as in-person readings in Virginia Beach for people throughout Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton Roads, and surrounding areas. You can book a spiritual reading here.

How Should You Prepare for a Spiritual Reading?

You do not need to do anything elaborate before a spiritual reading.

It can help to think about what you would most like clarity around, especially if there is a particular situation that has been weighing on you.

Before your session, you may want to:

  • Write down questions you do not want to forget.
  • Think about the areas of your life where you feel confused or stuck.
  • Find a quiet space if your reading is online.
  • Keep an open mind without feeling obligated to accept everything you hear.
  • Have something nearby for taking notes if that is helpful to you.
  • Give yourself a little time after the reading to process and reflect.

No Perfect Question Needed

Try not to put pressure on yourself to come up with the “perfect” question. Sometimes the most meaningful part of a reading comes from something you did not expect to explore.

What Happens After a Spiritual Reading?

Some messages may make sense immediately. Others may take time.

You may find yourself thinking about something from the reading later that day or even days afterward. A symbol that seemed unclear during the session may suddenly connect with something in your life.

I encourage reflection, but I do not recommend becoming consumed with trying to decode every word or symbol.

You might ask yourself:

  • What part of the reading stayed with me?
  • What felt most meaningful?
  • Did anything validate something I already knew?
  • Did the reading help me see a situation differently?
  • Is there something I want to explore further?
  • What insight can I realistically apply to my life?

The Value of One Insight

The value of a spiritual reading is not necessarily measured by how many messages you receive. Sometimes one meaningful insight can change the way you understand an entire situation.

How Can You Use a Spiritual Reading in Everyday Life?

For me, this is where a spiritual reading becomes most valuable.

A reading can offer information, but the real question is what that information means within the context of your life.

I think of the process like this:

Message → Meaning

You receive information. Together, we explore what it may mean in the context of your life and your specific situation.

Meaning → Reflection

You consider how it intersects with your actual experiences. You reflect on what feels meaningful and what does not.

Reflection → Choice

Then you decide what, if anything, you want to do with that insight. The spiritual reading does not make the final decision. You do.

That is why I see spiritual readings as a tool for clarity rather than a replacement for your own judgment.

My Approach to Spiritual Readings

My approach is centered on connection, conversation, and meaning.

I do not expect you to sit silently while I talk for an entire session. I also do not want to simply give you information without helping you understand how it may connect with your life.

The reading develops naturally as we move between receiving information and discussing what comes through.

I also believe your own intuition matters.

  • If something resonates deeply, we can explore it.
  • If something needs clarification, we can ask for more information.
  • If something does not resonate, you do not have to force it to fit.

Final Thoughts: How Do Spiritual Readings Work?

Every spiritual reader has their own way of working.

In my readings, the process begins with taking a moment to tap in and receive information. I share what comes through, pause to see what resonates, and give you an opportunity to ask questions.

From there, I can return to Source and continue receiving additional information. We may move through this process several times before stepping back to explore the larger meaning behind the messages.

That final conversation is an important part of the experience for me. I want you to understand how the information may intersect with your life and what it might help you see from a different perspective.

  • You may leave with validation around something you have already been sensing.
  • You may recognize a pattern you had not noticed before.
  • You may simply have a new question to consider.

Whatever comes through, you remain the person who decides what resonates and how you move forward.

If you would like to experience this process for yourself, you can book a spiritual reading.

Frequently Asked Questions About How Spiritual Readings Work

How do spiritual readings work?

Spiritual readings involve a reader receiving intuitive or spiritual information and sharing it with the client. In my sessions, I take time to tap in, share what I receive, pause to discuss what resonates, answer questions by returning to Source for more information, and then explore how the messages may relate to your life.

What happens during a spiritual reading?

I begin by explaining the process and then take a few moments to tap in. Once information begins coming through, I share it with you. We periodically pause so you can discuss what resonates and ask questions before I tap back in for additional information.

How does a spiritual reader get information?

Different spiritual readers describe the process differently. Information may be experienced as words, images, feelings, symbols, physical sensations, or a sense of inner knowing. Readers may describe the source of the information as Source, Higher Self, intuition, spiritual guidance, spirit guides, or other terms depending on their beliefs.

Where do spiritual messages come from?

There is no single answer accepted by everyone. Spiritual readers may believe messages come from Source, a Higher Power, Higher Self, intuition, spirit guides, energy, or loved ones in spirit. Spiritual experiences are subjective, and people may interpret their source differently.

What does it mean when a spiritual reading resonates?

When information resonates, it feels meaningful, relevant, or recognizable within the context of your life. It may connect with something you are experiencing, validate something you already sense, or bring attention to a pattern you recognize.

What if something in a spiritual reading does not resonate?

You do not have to force a message to fit. We may ask for clarification, consider whether the information is symbolic, continue to see if more context emerges, or simply leave the message where it is.

Can I ask questions during a spiritual reading?

Yes. Questions are an important part of my spiritual reading process. I typically share information, pause to discuss what resonates, and then give you an opportunity to ask questions before I tap back in for additional guidance.

Do I need to tell a spiritual reader everything beforehand?

No. You may share a particular intention or area you want to explore, but you do not need to provide your entire life story. There will be opportunities during the reading to provide context and ask questions.

How long does it take a spiritual reader to tap in?

For me, tapping in may take only a few seconds or sometimes closer to a minute. I explain this before beginning so clients understand that a brief period of silence at the start of the reading is a normal part of my process.

How should I prepare for a spiritual reading?

You may want to think about the areas where you would like clarity and write down any questions you do not want to forget. If your reading is online, choose a quiet and comfortable space where you can speak openly and reflect.

Do online spiritual readings work differently?

My online spiritual readings follow essentially the same process as in-person sessions. I tap in, share the information I receive, pause for questions and discussion, and continue the process based on what comes through.

What happens after a spiritual reading?

After a reading, you may want to reflect on the messages that felt most meaningful and consider how they relate to your life. Some information may make sense immediately, while other insights may become clearer with time.

Can a spiritual reading predict the future?

A spiritual reading may offer insight into patterns, possibilities, or potential directions, but I do not believe a reading should be treated as a fixed prediction of the future. Choices, circumstances, and free will can all influence what happens next.

Are spiritual readings accurate?

People experience spiritual readings differently. Some messages may feel immediately accurate or meaningful, while others may be symbolic or may not resonate. I encourage clients to use their own discernment and not feel obligated to accept every message as fact.
